Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about posture and pain relief
What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is an educational method that teaches how to identify and change harmful postural and movement habits. It reduces unnecessary strain on the musculoskeletal system, helping to relieve chronic pain (back, neck, joints), release tension, and improve ease and flexibility in daily life.
Is it a medical treatment, massage, or a set of exercises (like Yoga)?
No. The Alexander Technique is not a passive medical treatment, nor is it massage or a set of exercises. Unlike Yoga or Pilates, it is a process of "re-education" where the student takes an active role in learning how to use their body correctly in every routine action.
What happens during a lesson with Jude?
Each lesson is private and lasts about 45 minutes. The session is usually divided into two parts:
- Table work: Lying comfortably on the back (fully clothed) where the teacher helps release hidden tensions, lengthen the spine, and calm the nervous system.
- Activity work: Practical guidance in daily activities (like sitting, standing, and walking) using gentle touch and verbal directions to teach effortless movement.
How long until I feel improvement and how many lessons will I need?
Many students experience relief and improvement after the first few lessons. However, since the goal is to change deep habits for the long term rather than providing a temporary "quick fix," a basic series of 20 to 30 lessons is generally recommended. The duration depends on your individual goals.
Is special clothing required for the lessons?
There is no need for special sportswear. It is recommended to arrive in regular, comfortable daily clothes (such as trousers rather than tight skirts) that do not restrict movement. Lessons are conducted fully clothed.
Who is the technique for and how does it help musicians and performers?
The method is suitable for everyone: from those suffering from chronic pain and office workers to pregnant women. For musicians, actors, and dancers, the technique is essential: it helps prevent Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), improves sound and breathing quality, and provides practical tools to manage stage fright and performance anxiety.
Can the lessons be combined with other treatments?
Yes, they can be combined. However, to avoid confusion between approaches and to understand what truly helps, it is recommended to start with a series of Alexander lessons first. This builds a foundation of proper body use, which often solves the root cause of the problem that other treatments only relieve temporarily.
