Suffering from Migraines and a Clenched Jaw? The Hidden Link to Neck Tension
Mental and physical stress often manifests as chronic clenching of the jaw and neck, serving as a primary trigger for migraines and headaches. The Alexander Technique offers practical tools to release accumulated tension and restore calm and control to your nervous system.
Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Tension and Pain
Under stress, we tend to lock our jaws and contract our necks. This contraction increases pain, which in turn creates more pressure and tension—leaving us in an endless loop of pain. Learning to identify these contraction patterns and stop them breaks the cycle at its root and prevents aggravation.
Inhibition, Release, and Prevention
By practicing the tool of "Inhibition," the student learns not to react automatically with contraction when experiencing stress or an approaching sense of pain. Calming the nervous system allows the neck and jaw muscles to release, effectively preventing the development of a headache attack before it even begins.
How does the technique prevent headaches and migraines?
- Reducing joint strain: Releasing chronic pressure from the jaw (preventing teeth clenching/bruxism), neck, and shoulders.
- Breathing awareness: Improving and changing breathing patterns that enhance oxygen supply to the brain.
- General calming: Calming the autonomic nervous system and reducing the stress response (Fight or Flight).
